Bill Millerd’s decision to tackle Funny Girl at the Stanley runs significant risks. Can a Vancouver company handle such a quintessential Noo Yawk musical? Can Cailin Stadnyk measure up to the standard set by Barbra Streisand, she of the amazing voice, who became a star with the show on Broadway, made “People” her signature song, and won an Oscar for the movie? And can the Arts Club manage the financial risks of a production this size with a cast of 17, a six-piece orchestra, dozens of lavish costumes, etc? The answers: Yes, Definitely, and Yes. A terrific show with a talented funny girl in the title role, this looks like the number one hit of the Christmas season.

Funny Girl is the ugly duckling tale of Fanny Brice, a goofy comic singer from the Lower East Side with no shortage of chutzpah, who rises to stardom in 1920s vaudeville with the Ziegfeld Follies. Her professional success comes pretty quickly, despite the opening song, “If a Girl Isn’t Pretty,” that suggests that “if a girl’s incidentals/Are no bigger than two lentils,” she’ll have a tough time.

The real narrative focus is the poor little rich girl story of Fanny’s relationship with Nicky Arnstein, the sophisticated gambler whom she loves, wins, and eventually loses. Today we’d say he feels threatened by her money and success. But the script, written in the pre-feminist 1960s, says she emasculates him. It’s her own fault, Nicky and her mother agree, and so does Fanny herself in the finale where she also decides: to hell with it, “nobody is gonna rain on my parade.” The reprise of the best song in the show carries more conviction than the sexist theme. Besides, Nicky is ultimately a drip. Who needs him? There’s a reason it’s not called Funny Guy. You go, girl!

Tall, thin and almost too pretty, Cailin Stadnyk, so impressive as the squeaky-voiced movie starlet in last year’s Singin’ in the Rain, is absolutely adorable as Fanny. She’s not a belter and can’t match Streisand’s power and rich tonality, especially in the ballads, but who can? There’s no way I’ll ever hear any but Streisand’s voice no matter who sings “People” or the gorgeous “Music that Makes Me Dance.” Stadnyk has a fine voice and a wonderful gift for comedy. She sells everything she sings, particularly the comic chorus numbers. Most importantly, she’s completely lovable. We root for her all the way.

Stadnyk gets strong support from an ensemble of singers who can sing and dancers who can dance—not always a given in Vancouver musicals. Ruth Nichol as Fanny’s stage mother and Patti Allan as a yenta neighbor are both very funny. Todd Talbot as Eddie, her mentor and lifelong friend, is a tap dance whiz with a nice voice and endearing stage presence who can play the kazoo standing on his head! Don Noble makes an appropriately debonair Nicky. Kudos to director Bill Millerd and his whole production team for nailing the period with its corny but slick vaudeville style. Special praise to Valerie Easton for the choreography. You know it’s good when you find yourself wishing there were more dancing.

Ironic footnote: The original production of Funny Girl was nominated for eight Tony Awards in 1965. It lost five of them, including Best Musical, to Hello, Dolly, with Streisand losing Best Actress to Dolly’s Carol Channing. Hello, Dolly was the show that nearly bankrupted the Playhouse last year, causing the company to eliminate musicals from its season and leaving the field to the Arts Club. Call this Funny Girl’s revenge.

BEIJING, Oct. 27 -- The "Sex and City" actress thinks it is incredible that Angelina has opened her home to three underprivileged children -- Cambodian son Maddox, six, three-year-old Vietnamese son Pax and two-year-old Ethiopian daughter Zahara -- and admits she can't even imagine doing the same.

Parker -- who has a five-year-old son, James, with husband Matthew Broderick -- said: "It's too late for me to have a big family -- I can't imagine it now.

"But I do think that what people like Angelina Jolie do is amazing. I love being a mother and I would be thrilled if my family were larger but I can't imagine having eight children."

The 42-year-old star admits she finds it hard to balance motherhood with being an actress because of all the attention it brings.

She added to Britain's OK! magazine: "The loss of privacy scares me, that's why you don't hear me complaining about that stuff and that is why you can't trap me into talking about the paparazzi."

"I don't know if I have found a happy balance with the cultural phenomenon of celebrity, especially what has happened over the last five years. I don't think I will ever understand or strike a balance with that."

Parker will soon be seen in the "Sex and the City: The Movie."

Lindsay's dad wants bygones to be bygones

BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Lindsay Lohan's dad, Michael, released from jail a few months ago and now a born-again Christian, says he wants to patch things up with his starlet daughter.

"Reconciliation and redemption — across the board," says Lohan. "Just all of us getting right with God."

Lindsay, 21, star of "Mean Girls," "Freaky Friday" and other films, has said that her father's behavior and her parents' divorce have caused her to act out.

Michael and estranged wife Dina Lohan settled their long-simmering divorce in August, months after he left a New York state prison where he served almost two years for drunken driving and other charges.

He reunited with Lindsay in September after a three and a half-year estrangement. She had entered a drug and alcohol treatment center the previous month after reaching a plea deal on misdemeanor drunken driving and cocaine charges.

Does Lohan blame himself for Lindsay's troubles?

"Absolutely. How can I not? I mean, we lead by example," Lohan said in an interview Wednesday with AP Television News.

He entered a Christian-based drug and rehabilitation center in West Babylon, N.Y., after he was released from prison in March. Lohan had repeatedly said Lindsay needed the same kind of treatment.

China to raise reserve requirement ratio

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- China will raise the reserve requirement ratio by half a percentage point to 13 percent for commercial banks from October 25, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) announced on Saturday.
This is the eighth such move this year and only one month after the seventh hike of half a percentage point on September 25.
The move is aimed at "strengthening liquidity management in the banking system and checking excessive credit growth", the central bank said in a statement.
After the eighth rise, the reserve requirement ratio has reached a ten-year high.
The move came after the central bank's announcement on Friday that the country's foreign exchange reserve has exceeded 1.43 trillion U.S. dollars by the end of September, up 45.1 percent from the same period last year.
A total of 367.3 billion U.S. dollars were added to the country's foreign exchange reserve in the first nine months, 120 billion U.S. dollars more than the increment in the entire 2006.
The huge foreign exchange reserve is considered the main reason for excess liquidity in China, as the central bank has to spend money to purchase foreign exchange, aggravating the problem.
Excess liquidity could lead to price hikes and pour more fuel into the sizzling economy.
By the end of September, the M2 -- a broad measure of money supply, which indicates the monetary demand of the whole country, grew by 18.45 percent from a year ago to 39.31 trillion yuan.
China's commercial banks lent out 3.36 trillion yuan in the first nine months, surpassing the full-year figure in 2006.
The key economic data, including the GDP and the inflation indicator, which is to be released later this month, are estimated to remain high. The consumer price index reached a decade-high of 6.5 percent in August, and the GDP raised by 11.5 percent in the first half.
Besides a total of four percentage points hike of the reserve requirement ratio, the central bank has reduced the tax on interest income to 5 percent from 20 percent on August 15, and raised the interest rates for five times this year.
